How do online courses work?

In online courses, students attend class by accessing the virtual classroom through an online learning system. Similar to a traditional course, students complete assignments according to the class schedule. These assignments might include completing readings from a textbook or current article, writing a paper, completing a project, or contributing to the course discussion. Students communicate regularly with the instructor and classmates via online discussion forums.

Online courses are not self-paced, independent study courses. Students are required to complete assignments according to the class schedule, to maintain regular contact with the instructor, and to participate in online class discussions. Often, online students report that the online learning experience is richer than a traditional classroom because of the level of engagement and discussion from fellow students living around the country and even the world.

Do I have to be online at a certain time each day or week?

No, but you are required to stay on schedule with assignments and login multiple times per week. You have the flexibility of choosing the day of the week and the time of day or night you want to log on to the Internet to work on an assignment, but you must complete your assignments and turn them in (through the online course) by the specified date and time. Some classes may have several due dates each week; others may require work only once per week.

Are all of the programs fully online?

Each program currently has a single on-campus component, or residency, designed to reinforce the concepts and knowledge learned in the program. This residency will be unique for each program and allow for you to interact with faculty and other online students, reinforce the skills learned in the program, and experience our Chicago campus.
