Saint Xavier University’s online Nurse Educator courses prepare nurses with teaching strategies for clinical settings as well as strategies to foster clinical decision-making, effective communication, and cultural competence. The program consists of three specialty courses, including a guided practicum, and fulfills the nursing education requirements for the Nurse Educator Certificate exam administered by the National League for Nursing.
A Master of Science in Nursing is required for admission. Students currently enrolled in SXU’s Master of Science in Nursing program may take the courses as part of their program. The certificate courses are required for students in the federal Nurse Faculty Loan Program.
NURSG 550 Concepts, Theories and Issues in Nursing Education
This course will help students integrate theories of adult education into teaching strategies and curriculum plans for various settings. They will learn to synthesize current knowledge from other disciplines with nursing theory and research findings, analyze trends and issues in nursing education, discuss accountability in nursing education, evaluate the role of the nurse educator, and evaluate current models of personal and professional roles in nursing education.
NURSG 554 Learning Principles and Instructional Methods for the Adult Learner
In this course students will discuss the issues and trends that impact curriculum development in nursing education, including continuing education and patient education, the influence of technology on nursing education, theoretical approaches to teaching and learning, and methods of instruction that promote student-centered learning. Students will construct a personal philosophy of nursing education.
NURSG 551 Nursing Education Role Practicum
This practicum course will be conducted in a real-world setting that will enable students to develop their new skills as a nurse educator in direct practice. Under the guidance of a faculty preceptor, students will apply the knowledge of the concepts, theories, and techniques of nursing education they have gained to teaching situations.
